Community analysis of the soft bottom megafauna (Crustacea, Mollusca) from the southeastern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs

Soft bottom megabenthic communities have been poorly studied in the Caribbean Sea. In this study we describe the structure and species composition of a Crustacea-Mollusca megafaunal community based on beam trawl samples taken between 13 and 60 m depth at the southwestern region of Santa Marta, Colombian Caribbean. Classification and ordination analyses using abundance data of crustaceans and molluscs produced two main groups (A and C), which seem to be controlled by depth and sediment characteristics. The research was carried out in order to know the sponge community composition and structure of the Archipelago Sabana-Camagüey, and to assay their use as indicators of the environmental severity and predictability, as well as of the most important stressors of this territory. For this purpose, sampling was done at stations located in 10 reef transects (between 10 and 20 m deep). Species which occurred more frequently with numerical dominance are typical of environments submitted to strong sedimentation and turbulence, which suggests that these environmental stressors and light are the main determinants of sponge community structure and composition in the studied reefs. Coral reefs are very important in Tanzania, both ecologically and socio-economically, as major fishing grounds and tourist attractions. Numerous fringing and patch reefs are located along about two-thirds of Tanzania’s coastline. These reefs have been partially to severely degraded by human (primarily destructive fishing practices) and natural (particularly coral bleaching) causes. These immediate human causes have been brought about by various socioeconomic root causes, particularly poverty and lack of proper management. El efecto de la temporada ciclónica 2005 sobre el fitoplancton de la Bahía de Cienfuegos, Cuba OceanDocs

El fitoplancton es uno de los componentes más abundantes de la biodiversidad de la Bahía de Cienfuegos. Se estudió el impacto de la temporada ciclónica 2005 sobre la composición y abundancia de estos organismos en el período de marzo-octubre. La composición específica de microalgas planctónicas de la bahía en marzo estuvo dominada por diatomeas y dinoflagelados marino-estuarinos como Nitzschia longissima, Thalassionema nitzschioides y Prorocentrum micans. Al final de la temporada ciclónica, los cambios en la estructura de la comunidad fitoplanctónica fueron drásticos, prácticamente no se registró fitoplancton marino en la bahía. Esta investigación tiene como propósito el de identificar las especies de los poliquetos bentónicos y conocer la actividad biológica de estos organismos marinos en las diferentes bahías y puertos en el área del Archipiélago de Galápagos, con la finalidad de determinar la composción, distribución y abundancia de cada uno de ellos y sus asociaciones existentes en la zona estudiada, durante el segundo Crucero de la Armada del Ecuador a bordo del B7I "ORION" entre septiembre y octubre de 1999.

Estudio de las comunidades del fitoplancton y zooplancton en Monteverde, Península de Santa Elena, Ecuador durante noviembre de 2006 OceanDocs

El presente estudio se efectuó frente a la localidad de Monteverde, Península de Santa Elena, monitoreándose un total de 15 estaciones durante los estados de marea de flujo y reflujo en noviembre de 2006. Las mayores concentraciones de clorofila a: Se observó en la estación 9 en la capa superficial con valores de 0.90 mg/m3 determinándose como un área de mayor productividad y la menor concentración se registró en la estación 4 con valor de 0.10 mg/m3 durante la fase de flujo. Estudio de los poliquetos bentónicos y fauna acompañante en la zona intermareal y submareal de la Bahía de Santa Elena (Ecuador) durante el año 2007 OceanDocs

Se presentan los resultados obtenidos del estudio de los poliquetos de la Bahía de Santa Elena en la zona intermareal rocosa y arenosa del Puerto de Salinas (Yacht Club), Puerto Lucía, Santa Rosa, Terminal Petrolero de la Superintendencia de La Libertad y el área de Ballenita. Del total de poliquetos identificados la especie Pareurythoe spirocirrata es la más frecuente del área estudiada y representan el 9% del total de poliquetos, prefiere vivir en la zona rocosa del área de Santa Rosa y Puerto Lucía. Del análisis de la fauna bentónica de la zona submareal del área de la Bahía de Santa Elena, se identificaron 13 especies de poliquetos bentónicos siendo la especie Capetilla sp. la más abundante (10%), seguido por la especie Sabella sp. Esta investigación tiene como propósito conocer la actividad biológica de la zona intermareal en el área de la costa ecuatoriana con la finalidad de determinar la taxonomía, distribución y abundancia de los poliquetos intermareales capturados en la zona estudiada, que servirán como línea de base para futuros Estudios de Impacto Ambiental (EIA) por las diversas alteraciones ambientales o contaminantes de origen antropogénica y por obras portuarias.

Ce travail s’intéresse non seulement à la connaissance de la faune associée aux moules notamment : Mytilus galloprovincialis, mais aussi à une étude systématique et écologique de la faune récoltée. Cette étude a été réalisée dans le lac de Bizerte, à la station de mytiliculture de Menzel Jemil. Une partie de ce travail est consacrée à un examen systématique de la faune récoltée et qui nous a permis d’inventorier 6 embranchements dont les annélides qui sont représentés par 10 espèces de Polychètes. Nous présentons également les résultats de l’étude écologique du peuplement suivant les trois saisons: hiver, printemps, et été. The abundance, biomass and composition of pelagic ciliates in East African lakes of different salinity and trophy OceanDocs

Planktonic ciliates were studied in 17 tropical East African lakes of different salinity and trophic status. Oligotrichs (e.g., Strombidium, Strobilidium and Halteria) and scuticociliates (e.g., Cyclidium, Pleuronema, Cristigera), dominated the ciliate communities. Conductivity and trophic status were the most important environmental variables influencing the distribution of ciliate species in East African lakes. Herbivorous oligotrichs were important in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes, as they are in temperate and subtropical lakes, but their importance decreased with increasing chlorophyll a concentration and conductivity. Planktonic information obtained in four fixed stations in front of Esmeraldas coast, Punta Galera, Puerto López and salinas is analyzed, during 1999-2000 and 2003-2006 periods. Temporal variability of phytoplankton and zooplankton densities between 2004 and 2006 were mainly determined by the oceanographic characteristics, and by the interrelations between the components of plankton and seasonal distribution of the organisms, as well. Variación espacial en comunidades de esponjas de la costa oriental de Bahía de Cochinos, Cuba OceanDocs

The sponge communities at four locations on the east coast of Bahía de Cochinos were surveyed in October 2002. At each location, sampling sites were established in the ecological zones of patch reef (3 m), shallow terrace (6-10 m), and deep terrace (15 m). The line-transect method with a 10 m line as sampling unit was used to measure sponge bottom coverage, and a 1 m square grid was used to quantify sponge community density. Species heterogeneity and species richness indices showed variability among sites and tended to increase with depth. Thirty species belonging to 19 families and 21 genera were found.
